Updates [16 Jul 2006|05:51pm]
I've been doing all my posting on my blogger (comfortable-in-chaos.blogspot.com) since it's been a change of scenery for me. If you're bored enough to read about my life then you always click yourself in that direction ;p.

At this very moment it's blazing hot and the house is a self-contained furnace. I have spent the last three days studying for the second exam of my obstetric and pediatric theory courses (exam one went horribly for me). I have a big group presentation to do as well as a paper coming up AND I have to make sure I'm studying from this fat NCLEX book before 8/14th. I also have to decide if I can fit in some time for some American History stuff to challenge that requirement. Lord, have mercy.

Ok, I'm burning up. Adios. I need a swimming pool like right now.

Kickin' It [17 Jun 2006|07:29pm]
I'm glad the US put up a fight today with ITALY. That game was just all around CRAZY--the sports commentator eloquently described it as "colorful" which it was and a lot more. That is to say the main referee was just handing out the red and yellow cards like freakin' halloween candy and making bad calls all the way. So Italy lost a player to a red card giving the US a one man advantage.. next thing you know, Mastroeni gets a red card for a late tackle.. THEN Pope gets one right after the second half started (for what, I don't know). So all in all, it came down to 10 Italian players and NINE US players.. can you belive that? Tomfoolery. haha. Oh and the 1-1 score was thanks to an own-goal by an Italian player--good thing the US scored a little luck today. They play Ghana next and we shall see how that goes since Croatia beat the US and Ghana beat Croatia. Hmm.. anyways, I have a lot more respect for those American boys and I applaud them. That was the best game I've seen so far. I have yet to see the Brazilians, Germans, Spaniards and Japanese play.. we'll see.

Yeah, this is truly my diversion from nursing school. I LEFT MY HEART IN GERMANY with all those hot soccer players (HAHA)...no, not really :P.

decisions [01 Jun 2006|11:02am]
Who shall I vote for?

Governor:

Robert C. Newman OR Jefferey R. Burns, OR Arnold Schwarzenegger, OR Bill Chambers

I'll stop there because I'm already lost. I just know that Ellen Corbett supposedly "supports" Nurses so they got my attention there. What is she running for again? Shoot, I can't even remember. Get with it, Hyo.

money can die (sometimes) [29 May 2006|08:16am]
It's hard not having a job. No job=no income. I just live off an odd combination of student loans, grants, scholarships, some savings and a few side jobs here and there. As of late however, my funds have been dwindling dramatically before my eyes for various reasons or maybe it's just that I'm starting to notice it now :P. It kind of sucks. Either I scrupulously save my money and try to get through the summer (car payments, car insurance, cell phone bills, etc. etc.) or procure some more money elsewhere. Gosh, this sucks.

ame furu [21 May 2006|04:31pm]
Strange. This California weather isn't going with the whole "April showers bring May flowers". Somehow it's all about fickle weather. A spell of hot summer weather followed by a cool/windy spell, and now a fully wet rainy session.

At least it'll wash off the dirt that's been sitting on my car for ages...

Perhaps I won't feel as bad for not going outside because of this wet weather.. (afterall, all I've been doing is studying, studying, studying, sleeping, and eating and complaining about the ridiculous nature of finals and how much I hate them with a passion... :P)

Shut up already, Hyo.

That's it. My future home is getting a swimming pool and jacuzzi and I don't care what anyone says.. Haha. Anything to relax after the stress runneth over the cup that is supposed to hold all my sanity and well-being........

SEND ME GOOD VIBES PEOPLE! I'm struggling like a cat in water with my finals and though I know it'll be over soon enough, it's not over till it's OVER!!!!!!!!!!!

These words constantly ring in my head: "I will not be a fat nursing student, I will not be a fat nurse... I will not be a fat nursing student, I will not be a fat nurse..."

Yes, I've gained weight this semester and it's a horrible feeling because it was the unfortunate side effect of tons of stress, studying and driving. So, now the war against fat is even more horrendous, haha. I'm brining in the nuclear weapons because I hate this feeling. However, despite the instantaneous nature of nuclear weaponry, the weight battle will take time and Lord, have mercy, I'm gonna need some help and faith here :P.

haha.

Oh and you know what's REALLY gross? You google "fat nurse" for images and you get disgusting porn pictures of women wearing white, slutty nurse outfits. Ummm, NO.

74 degrees [01 May 2006|12:25pm]
According to weather.com, it's 74 degrees for the 95123 zipcode.

It's amazingly beautiful outside and the weather is incredible! This is why it's expensive to live in California :P.

You win some, you lose some... [18 Apr 2006|10:55pm]
I got an 83% on my psych nursing test last week. Disappointing. This second exam was relatively easy compared to the first one and the teacher even threw out questions! I guess psych just isn't my thing because I really studied for this one.. I don't know.

All I can say is you can't win every battle but you gotta win the war. Actually my pops told me that and I thought that was sort of neat because it's pretty true....

Well I have to get up early for psych clinical tomorrow morning (5 am) so buenas (?) noches and adios amigos....

Alternative Spring Break [08 Apr 2006|01:23pm]
[ mood | blank ]
[ music | Enya - songs from AMARANTINE ]

Hello LJ world and visitors.

I have been going through a variety of ups and downs in the last two months of this Spring semester and my communication skills, on all levels and expressions, have been severely lacking so I do appologize for all its unpleasant and unfriendly manifestations. I'm trying to find solid footing on difficult ground and it hasn't been easy. Confronting the mind, body and spirit and challenging oneself to overcome difficulties and rise above it all is something to always hold on to because one must, but it's a war sometimes and one that takes time to see results with....

Now with that ambiguousness aside I will briefly update you.

I spent my spring break down in Tijuana, Mexico. To say the least, it was a fantastic and amazing experience for me in all sorts of ways. I won't go into detail in this post because I am not in the mood to do so but sometime soon I will.

I was definitely not the typical "Spring-Breaker" partying at Rosarito Beach or living it up on Avenida Revolucion and it was interesting to acutally see these folks "in action", haha. Anyhow, I participated in service-learning which is exactly what it is: we did a bunch of volunteer service and we learned a helluvalot while we were there. I'll describe more later.... but for now, here are a few pics:

The first school we were at
With the kiddies at the first school we mixed cement at.

3rd school we were at.. the kids were great
At the third and last school we mixed cement for. These kids were great. In my broken Spanish I asked "una (uno?) photo conmigo?" and they were like "Si!"...:)

Back in San Diego; ready to fly home!
One last shot in front of San Diego airport before flying back to San Jose. There were 23 of us; an incredibly diverse group of 21 students and two faculty.

Details later....

Adios mis amigos!

Heel to toe, or is it toe to heel?! Darn... [12 Mar 2006|06:51pm]
$67 to confirm that I suck at snowboarding!!! BUT, it was a beautiful Saturday on the mountain and I was glad to get out with friends for some time on the slopes. Let me just add that we sat for 2.5 hours with our car's engine off as 80 west turned into a parking lot in the aftermath of a fairly large accident after we took off from Boreal (my first time in such a mess). We watched day turn into night with people emerging from 4x4's and walking around, talking and even letting Spot out for an evening pee :P. It took us a solid 4-5 hours to head home so it was a LONG day but I suppose it was somewhat of an adventure and one that merits a LJ entry.

Now, back to reality and loads of homework but first, a shower.

A million to one... [09 Mar 2006|10:10pm]
I can't get over this. Imagine being biracial and your partner/spouse is biracial too (let's say both of you are half black/half white). Next thing you know you're pregnant... with twins. Everything seems fine and dandy; you give birth, you start raising two little girls and then you notice something. One child's skin is turning darker, the other's lighter. With time, both begin to look different. Pretty soon you have this:

This happened to a real family in the UK. You can read the entire story here: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=377839&in_page_id=1770

In a nutshell:

"If a sperm containing all-white genes fuses with a similar egg and a sperm coding for purely black skin fuses with a similar egg, two babies of dramatically different colours will be born. The odds of this happening are 100 x 100 x 100 - a million to one."

-quoted from hyperlinked article from The Daily Mail, 2/21/06

How crazy and cool is that?!

Not bad, not bad... [07 Mar 2006|06:38pm]
So I gathered the time to send this pic, taken by my new LG cameraphone, to my email and was surprised to find that it wasn't bad at all. The picture is dark, I look tired and funky (what's new), but it marks a neat memory: me at club level (supposed to be ushering), watching the SAP Open final where Andy Murray won his first ATP title (he's only 18 too). Nice. I don't even play tennis (although I tried lessons once) but I will definitely try again soon. Good stuff. Shall I continue to year 4? Yes, if I have the time; chances are, I'll be working or training by then.

I created a new webpage using GOOGLE's setup. It's actually quite nice and very easy to use.

I dedicated my page to nursing school ramblings so check it out if you have nothing else to do:

Were you born to dance? [23 Feb 2006|10:01pm]
I should be studying psychiatric nursing right now but I can't take it much longer. This is an interesting article I found (because I have nothing interesting to say these days :P). Taken from discovery.com

Study: Some People Born to Dance
By Jennifer Viegas, Discovery News

Feb. 21, 2006 — Professional dancers are born with at least two special genes that give them a leg up on the rest of us, according to a new study.

Recent research also has suggested that intelligence, athletic ability and musical talent are linked to our genes and brain hard-wiring.

With dancing added to the list, the evidence indicates that certain individuals are born with a predisposition to specific behaviors and talents, and that at least some of these qualities may represent evolved attributes.

"I think that dancing is an evolved trait," said Richard Ebstein, who led the recent study, published in a recent Public Library of Science Genetics journal. "Animals have courtship dances and I think that human dancing represents the further development of a very ancient animal trait."

Ebstein, a psychology professor at Hebrew University's Scheinfeld Center for Genetic Studies, said, "Also the fact that dancing is universal and existed in all human societies, even those communities of man separated geographically by tens of thousands of years (native Australians, native Americans, Africans, Eurasians) attests to the very early origin of dance in our evolution as a species."

Ebstein, doctoral student Rachel Bachner-Melman and their colleagues examined the DNA of 85 currently performing dancers and their parents. They then did the same thing for 91 competitive athletes and 872 people who neither regularly dance nor often participate in sports.

The scientists discovered that dancers tend to possess variants of two genes that are involved in the transmission of information between nerve cells.

One of the identified genes is a transporter of serotonin, a brain transmitter that contributes to spiritual experience. The second is a receptor of the hormone vasopressin, which many studies suggest modulates social communication and human bonding.

"People are born to dance," Ebstein told Discovery News. "They have (other) genes that partially contribute to musical talent, such as coordination, sense of rhythm. However, the genes we studied are more related to the emotional side of dancing — the need and ability to communicate with other people and a spiritual side to their natures that not only enable them to feel the music, but to communicate that feeling to others via dance."

Ebstein believes some adults may possess the special gene variants, but they perhaps never nurtured the related skills or recognized their hidden talent.

He said, "Many of us surely have the ability, but for a hundred reasons never exploited that particular talent."

Ebstein explained that the identified genes seem to be linked to every form of dancing, from tap to hula, since all usually involve social communication and connecting to music or rhythms.

Irving Gottesman, a senior fellow in psychology at the University of Minnesota and an emeritus professor from the University of Virginia, is one of the world's leading experts on genes as they relate to human behavior and psychology.

Through prior research papers sent to Discovery News, Gottesman emphasized that genes are only one part of "complex causality" systems that make us who we are. For example, Gottesman confirmed that intelligence can be in our genes, but that socioeconomic considerations, such as a quality education, can have a greater influence on a person's intellect.

Ebstein agreed that genes were not the whole story. He said those of us without a twinkle-toed predisposition can still become good dancers, since "it's not only a question of having the right genes, but also training and motivation, that make professional dancers."

Feeling wretched [20 Feb 2006|08:37pm]
Poor Andy Murray. Too much stress and too much gatorade just didn't sit well with him I guess. I don't even know where this photo was taken but it's pretty cool looking, lol. I just saw Murray beat Roddick the other night AND Hewitt last night. The 18-year old's got some talent. Now I want to see Rafael Nadal kick some international a$$ haha.

Tennis for the newbie (me) [18 Feb 2006|09:16pm]
Today I did a number of interesting things: I saw Lleyton Hewitt (spelling?) play tennis (my first time seeing him), I got to eat real Ethiopian food (for the first time), and I was walking down the hallway with John McEnroe right by. All by volunteering at the SAP Open. By far, the best part were the organizers who are new this year. Harry and Kelly, his assistant, are wayyyy better than the other people before and they even let me go home early :). So I'll be doing something at the final tomorrow and am I seeing things or did 18-year old Andy Murray of England just beat Roddick 7-5 7-5...?! www.sapopentennis.com
